Guest sentiment
A snapshot of what local diners frequently mention about this location.
"We spent a night in Altamura and chose La locanda di Alice because of the location and the restaurant that's located in the same building. The room is very clean and spacious, with a cosy bed and bathroom. It's a bit tricky to enter the room as it's in the second floor and a very narrow staircase leads there."
"If I have to visit Altamura again, the reason must be here. The food was remarkable. Especially, pasta and fried octopus were impressive. The steamed mussels, you can enjoy the broth with Altamura bread as possible as you can take. If you booked hotel or B&B in old town of Altamura, it is highly accessible on foot and could enjoy second round at near. For foreigners who cannot speak Italian, the owner speaks English so it is visit-worthy to try Italian style great seafood."
"Today, we tried the restaurant for the lunch. The owner and the cook were very friendly (+++) and the food was excellent. The restaurant is well located and the environment is peacefully. We had a wonderful time. Thanks so much for your kindness and professionalism."
"I am reviewing the restaurant only but after having dining experience I definitely would like to try the hotel. Next time! This place is a bit off the main streets in Altamura but well worth looking for it. It is a family affair. Chef Umberto Romano with his mother is creating pieces of art. His sister is the most wonderful and very helpful hostess. We asked chef to surprise us and yes, he delivered and then some! We had antipasti with frutti di mari, cavatelli with funghi picked this morning, entire fish, I believe Branzino, from Mediterranean Sea and linguine with octopus. Then desserts: lemon delight, Baba with rum and ricotta heaven! We ended with a shot of infused rum and coffee. I have difficulty to find words to describe this experience! It was authentic, tickling our taste buds to seventh heaven and oh, so wonderful!!! It is a must while in Altamura! It was our first time in Italy and this place will be difficult to beat. I usually do not give glowing reviews, there is always something to improve but this pace is truly perfection with its ambiance, friendliness, service, and of course out of this world chef’s creations. Definitely will be back!"
"This review is about the restaurant only. This place is one of the kind gem!!! First, about the atmosphere: very quaint, inviting to relax and enjoy the marvels of the chef! It is a bit off the main streets in Altamura but so worth looking for! We asked chef, Umberto, to surprise us with menu and OMG he did! I do not remember all the names but we had frutti di mare, cavatelli fungi e salsiccia, entire baked and then lightly fried branzino fish and desserts. It was the feast! Our taste buds were definitely excited! Finished with a shot of infused rum and coffee. We were greeted and served by chef's sister. We even met chef's Mom. If you want truly special,Italian experience, this is the place to visit in Altamura"
"Without a doubt the best restaurant in Altamura. My family is from the area and we go back every now and then to visit. Discovered this place run by a brother (chef) and sister (front house) with an insane menu with specialties from Altamura and dishes from the chef’s travels, everything is sourced locally with homemade liquors like padre peppe and crema di limone. They cooked us a pasta off menu because of our preferences. They made us feel right at home and the food was 10/10. We will absolutely be back."
"Oh my goodness!!! This was amazingly perfectly good! We ate guazzetto and pesce del giorno cotto - was soooo tasty!!! Bravo to the chef, hope to be back here again."
"WOW WOW WOW. Me and my family had a truly memorable dinner at La Locanda di Alice, where every dish stod out and was delicious. We had the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina, which came with tomato and basil sauce, beautifully melted with mozzarella that was soft, flavorful, and baked to perfection. The Linguine ai Calamari con Peperone Crusco e Pane Croccante was a standout: the pasta was perfectly cookes, the calamari tender, and the addition of crispy pepper and crunchy bread added great texture and depth of flavor. The Orecchiette alla Crudaiola was light and fresh, a perfect summer dish with cherry tomatoes, arugula, caciocavallo cheese, and creamy stracciatella — simple ingredients elevated by freshness and balance. We also tried the Filetto di Manzo con Patate e Verdure Grigliate (special menu)which was another highlight. The beef was juicy and flavorful, accompanied by oven baked potatoes and perfectly grilled vegetables — hearty, satisfying, and well-seasoned. We also ordered as a starter the Insalata di polipo con sedano which was super fresh and good. The octopus was perfectly cooked and the vegetables/fruit was a great addition/combination I never thought would work, but in-fact was super nice Service was warm and attentive, honest and the ambiance cozy, and the quality-to-price ratio was excellent.Highly recommended for anyone seeking authentic Italian cuisine with both tradition and creativity."
